ESG at ILA Berlin Air Show 2010

Mission Tactical Worksattion (MTA) and Unmanned Mission Avionics Test Helicopter (UMAT) are the main exhibits at the ESG stand.

Fürstenfeldbruck, 07 June 2010

ESG Elektronik-und Logistik-GmbH is presenting at this year's ILA Berlin Air Show, 8 to 13 June its comprehensive portfolio of services for the aviation sector: The main exhibits are ESG's Mission Tactical Workstation (MTA) and Unmanned Mission Avionics Test Helicopter (UMAT).
The MTA is a military further development of ESG's Police Tactical Workstation (PTA) for civilian use to which specific modifications have been made with respect to environmental qualification and robustness of components. The MTA combines all functions required for carrying out personnel recovery missions in one toolkit.

The MTA is capable of receiving positional data and text messages on persons to be recovered from personal locator beacons and making this information available to the mission operator on a corresponding display screen. In addition, the MTA features the option of picking up a wide frequency spectrum and thus conducting classic search and rescue (SAR) missions too. With its considerable potential for expansion, the MTA will be able to map future user skill requirements in areas such as navigation, communication and reconnaissance as well. The modular design of its hardware and software system components allows integration of additional system components or software enhancements. As a result, MTA's toolkit concept also enables integration into other weapons systems in principle, thus allowing cross-functional use.
The Unmanned Mission Avionics Test Helicopter UMAT is a VTOL-UAS (Vertical Take Off & Landing – Unmanned Aerial System) which can be flown automatically and / or guided from ground by the UAV Control Station.

With UMAT ESG can offer an unmanned flying testbed for special applications for military and civil customers. These applications cover a wide spectrum from R&D investigations for the military customer (e.g. verification of UAS platform performance within a particular operational environment) to special services for the civil customer (e.g. border patrol, environmental monitoring etc.). To operate this system not only in restricted but also in non-restricted airspace without the need for special permission, ESG and its industrial partner Swiss-UAV together with civil and military certification authorities have started the definition and set-up of a certification process to generate a type certificate for this aircraft.

In addition, ESG presents an operator console to demonstrate mission preparation, excecution and evaluation for reconnaissance aircraft and UAVs including SAAFu (Sense & Avoid Assistance function). The exhibition of the cell of the Mission Avionics Test Helicopter (MAT) at the stand of the Federal Office of Defense Technology and Procurement (BWB) completes the fair presentation of the ESG. The MAT is a flying experimental testbed  that makes it possible to test systems during the development phase under operational conditions and to evaluate the test data. It is not necessary for the systems to be tested to be flight certified. With the MAT, innovative mission avionics can be determined in conjunction with the human component (“man in the loop”). The testing runs from individual components to whole systems – such as sensor systems for flight control, map  devices, integrated helmet systems or man-machine interfaces for different avionic components. With the MAT, the possibilities of sensor fusion, the sensor based landing aid (SeLa), the integration of thermal imaging devices, the latest generation technology projects  are presented.
