ESG receives BITKOM Embedded Systems Innovation Award 2010

BITKOM awards ESG's Electric Energy Manager E²M at the Embedded Systems Symposium.

Fürstenfeldbruck, 11 November 2010

At the Embedded Systems Symposium on 4 November in Berlin, BITKOM (the German Federal Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media) awarded companies for the first time for their innovations in the field of Embedded Systems.

ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH reached first place in the Embedded Systems Innovation Award 2010 with its Electric Energy Manager E²M.

In his keynote speech, BITKOM president Prof. Dr. August-Wilhelm Scheer explained: "We want to use this award to demonstrate the strategic importance of embedded systems for German industry, both in the present and in the future. Without embedded systems, the power grids of the future, electro-mobility and a modern medical supply system for our aging society will all be inconceivable, impossible developments."

Following the speech, Klaus Renger, CEO of ESG Consulting GmbH, accepted the certificate on behalf of the Chairman of the Board of Management of ESG, Gerhard Schempp, from Knut Degen (Director of the Embedded System work group at BITKOM) and Dr. Erasmus Landvogt (Federal Ministry of Education and Research).

The E²M, which was developed in the Automotive Division at ESG, employs completely new methods to control all energy flows in the vehicle between the power generator, energy consumer and energy store, thus optimising consumption, ensuring functional reliability and increasing driver support and convenience. It does this by managing the vehicle's energy flows reliably, saving resources while at the same time guaranteeing that safety-critical systems are always supplied with power.  The E²M also enables intelligent connection of solar modules as an additional, environmentally-friendly power source that can increase the range of the vehicle. It manages the available energy from the generator, solar cells and electrical storage and distributes the energy accordingly to the comfort, drive or high-voltage storage functions, depending on the situation.

As a purely software-based solution, the ESG Electric Energy Manager can very easily be re-calibrated to suit new vehicle models or variants.

The system architecture is compatible with AUTOSAR. Using a generic approach, the function can likewise be integrated onto standard cores of OEMs. Doing this gives the embedded system function a simple and transparent configuration due to the universal parameterisation of the system variables.

The generic system approach can be adapted to all drive technologies, regardless of the platform they use. Whether for a conventional engine, a hybrid or an electric vehicle, the Energy Manager controls and optimises the electrical energy flow.
