A particular highlight awaits visitors to the "Aerospace Testing Expo" trade fair this year: The MAT mission equipment carrier will "land" at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre from 15 to 17 April. The experimental helicopter, which was developed by ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH, is the showpiece at the Bundeswehr's "Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 61" stand.
The "Aerospace Testing Expo" is regarded as the leading global trade for the subjects of design, testing, evaluation, manufacturing and quality management in the field of aviation. Important applications for the civilian and military aviation, aerospace and satellite industry and for the field of defence are presented there.
The MAT mission equipment carrier is a flying experimental vehicle that makes it possible to test systems still in the development phase under operational conditions. The system of utmost importance with regard to introducing new helicopters and modernising established helicopters.
The essence of MAT are two completely separate electronic systems – a "test system" and a "safety system". The principle operates in the same way as in a driving school car. In the test system, components which have not yet been approved for use in aircraft can be tested, because the safety system is able to step in at any time and fly the helicopter safely.
MAT's first task was to test Bundeswehr models for predicting visibility ranges using thermal imaging devices. The Bundeswehr and industry are currently using MAT to develop solutions for a sensor-supported landing aid for helicopters. This should solve a pressing problem which is particularly relevant to deployments abroad: When helicopters have to land on loose ground, the rotor usually blows up so much dust or snow that the last few metres are virtually a blind flight.
