NATO exercise "UUSIMAA 2008": successful implementation of MESIS
The crisis management exercise system from ESG supports the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre.

To general satisfaction, the MESIS crisis management exercise system from ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH has been implemented successfully during the "UUSIMAA 2008" catastrophe management exercise. During the exercise, the "Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre" (EADRCC) practiced rescue operations in the event of large-scale catastrophes, with the emphasis on international cooperation.
The exercise took place in Helsinki from 1st - 5th June 2008 and involved over 1,000 participants from 25 countries. For the purpose of the exercise, a fictitious scenario involving catastrophic flooding with severe storms along the Finnish Baltic coast was played out at several locations in southern Finland. According to the scenario, large parts of the local infrastructure were destroyed. The scenario also involved the release of chemical substances and contamination of drinking water supplies, as well as a radioactive leak.
The exercise was used to practice organisational processes for rescue operations in the emergency centres. EADRCC used the MESIS solution from ESG. This supports the planning, implementation and evaluation of distributed exercises like UUSIMAA. The exercise directors can also add different exercise scenarios and sub-scenarios with individual tasks to the system and participants must then try to react to these accordingly.
The use of Web technology enables participation from very different locations. This networking of different sites and headquarters enables virtual collaboration and real-time distribution of information between a large number of participants. According to those responsible, the system was stable and enjoyed a very high level of acceptance from its users.
