Rapid high-tech solutions for Bundeswehr deployments
ESG Managing Director Gerhard Schempp presents pragmatic approaches for increasing the capability of the armed forces at short notice.
Bonn, 04 April 2008
Rapid technological measures which enable the effectiveness and efficiency of German armed forces to be improved at short notice were presented by Gerhard Schempp, Chairman of the Board of Management of ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH and Chairman of the Defence Industry Association in the ZVEI, Central Association of the Electrical Engineering and Electronics Industries. At a Parliamentary Committee for Aviation and Aerospace event in Bonn-Bad on Thursday, he said that the Bundeswehr was in increasing need of pragmatic solutions for the tasks they encounter during international deployments. He went on to say that such an approach was purposeful according to the saying of US General George C. Marshall: "Small deeds done are better than great deeds planned."
Schempp presented several solution approaches which are based on previously tested systems, follow a collective armed forces approach and in part use technologies from civilian applications. He said that this led to additional time and cost benefits. Amongst other things, the Managing Director of ESG mentioned solutions for securing German camps, sensor-supported helicopter landing aids for poor visibility conditions and new concepts for the logistical supply of deployment systems and vehicles abroad.
Schempp also addressed an aspect which Reinhold Robbe, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, had recently brought up: the prevention of trauma. The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces had remarked that "the increasing number of Bundeswehr deployments abroad also made it necessary to improve research into symptoms such as post-traumatic stress disorder and to help those affected as best and as comprehensively as possible". For this purpose, ESG has developed a highly interactive multimedia e-learning platform known as CHARLY. It serves to prevent trauma in accordance with the "Prevention is better than cure" principle. The system promotes a systematic desensitisation and increases the psychological resilience of forces and thus their ability to act in situations of acute stress.
In conclusion, Schempp summarised that "rapidly available capability increases for deployments are ready for operation in the electronics and information and communication technology innovation sectors". He finished by saying that ESG, as a long-term partner to the armed forces, could be relied on for this.
